Whistling Thorn Designs strives to be as sustainable as possible. The wallpapers are manufactured in the UK and are FSC certified. All the designs begin as hand-rendered illustrations before being transformed into designs and are printed using water-based inks.

Whistling Thorn Designs takes its name from the Whistling Thorn Acacia (Vachellia drepanolobium). Native to East Africa, this little acacia tree is home to stinging ants who live in the hollow thorny nodes on its branches. When the wind blows through the holes in thorny nodes it produces a whistling sound, hence the name Whistling Thorn. The ants and the tree have a symbiotic relationship – the ants protecting the tree from the giraffe who love to eat its leaves and the tree providing the ants with a home.
